The sudden lockdown in March 2020 caused an overnight shift in day-to-day life, affecting routines, employment, education, and socialisation. It probably isn’t a surprise then that there has been an increased level of stress among children.
While there has been a steady rise in school-age children experiencing anxiety and depression, the closure of schools has seen referrals fall by a third. However, with schools reopening, many are predicting a sharp rise in referrals to children’s mental health services.
While they may seem scary, referrals are not a bad thing. Children’s mental health services provide a support network for children, giving them stability and tools to help to manage their worries in healthy and productive ways.
If you are worried about your child’s mental health, then there are many different services and charities available to help you. For more information on referrals, contact your child’s school, or speak to your GP.
