To become a licensed child chaperone at Flying Tots, we will guide you to apply through your local Council. Start by preparing an enhanced DBS check, which can take up to four weeks to clear. It is essential to keep updated and refer to legislation and detailed information on chaperones and children in entertainment. DBS and enhanced vetting checks are valid for three years from the date of application, and their dates may differ from chaperone licenses. Although you may already possess a DBS, obtaining it with us at Flying Tots is recommended.
Candidates are encouraged to subscribe to the DBS update service for an annual cost of £13. This online service keeps your standard and enhanced DBS certificates current and allows employers to check a certificate online with your consent. You can reuse your certificate when applying for a position in the same workforce requiring the same type and level of check. However, if you fail to renew your annual update, you may need to undergo a new DBS check.
YOUR ROLE
As a Flying Tots chaperone, your primary focus is the child’s protection, safety and well-being. You are the child’s go-to person for support, guidance, and protection. You must negotiate with the production company on-site, and decline requests that conflict with the child’s health, education, or license terms. For example, avoid allowing children to perform while unwell or stay at a performance location beyond permitted hours.
Keep a record of key contacts, including licensing authorities, the child’s agent, and their parent or guardian. A chaperone can supervise a maximum of 12 children, but eight is recommended for better supervision in most cases. Ensure a child has the appropriate license before allowing them to perform. If the production company cannot provide proof of the child’s license, contact your Council, as a violation may have occurred. Production companies must log certain activities during performances, such as arrival and departure times.
